Langley's Green named first team All-State:

Langley graduate Kelsey Green has been tabbed as a first team All-State selection. Green, a shortstop, started for four years under Morrow and has been a first team All-Region selection during the past two. She'll play collegiate ball at the University of North Carolina. 

After finishing 2008 with a .484 (46-for-95) batting average, with six home runs, 38 RBIs and a .730 slugging percentage, Green broke the existing Virginia High School League record for career hits (151) by 35 with her career mark of 186.

Green's teams went a combined 82-20 during her four-year tenure, including four consecutive 20-win campaigns.

"While there's no connection between Kelsey's graduation and my retirement,” Morrow wrote in a press release, “I'll be the first to say that players that I had like Kelsey certainly made me a better coach.”

After nine seasons, 162 wins and a countless number of lesson plans, Langley's Bob Morrow has retired from his teaching and coaching positions at the school.

As the Saxons softball coach since 2000, Morrow amassed a 162-58 (.736) career record. His teams have won four Liberty District titles -- including the last three -- and reached the Northern Region tournament in eight of his nine seasons.

“I've enjoyed it and I'm probably going to miss it more than anything,” said Morrow of his coaching career. “But I think it's time to try something else.”

Morrow has taught Social Studies at the McLean-area school since 1999, but most of his legend has been built on the diamond.

A Morrow-led group never lost a first-round region game, and his 2005 squad even set the Virginia High School League record for runs (263) and hits (285) in a season. Still, it was his first district title in 2004 that will always hold a special place in his heart.

“Just seeing that team come together ... it really was satisfying to watch the kids,” Morrow said, “ ... the joy of the kids when they won.”

Though he doesn't have any specific plans for retirement just yet, Morrow denied that there will be a Brett Favre-like vacillation in his decision.

“I don't think so,” Morrow said, laughing about rumors that currently surround the Green Bay Packers' ex-quarterback. “It's a good idea though.”
