South Lakes girls basketball takes local tournament:
With a 53-52 win over Edison last Thursday, the South Lakes girls basketball team capped an 8-2 regular season and 3-0 playoff romp through the City of Falls Church Summer League, which included area stalwarts Oakton, Langley, McLean, Woodson, Madison and West Springfield.
After a 53-48 quarterfinal win over George Mason on Aug. 11, coach Christy Winters Scott's team continued its success by besting Liberty District rival McLean, 35-27, on Aug. 12 – a win keyed by rising senior Lachelle Wallace's 12-point, 12-rebound effort.
At the Falls Church Community Center on Aug. 14, South Lakes secured its summer league title by turning a four-point deficit at halftime into a 44-31 advantage after three quarters of play.
Rising senior Kelcyn Manurs led South Lakes with 18 points and seven rebounds against Edison, while rising junior Jasmine Jones added 15 points and five rebounds. Manurs and Jones combined to make 11-of-11 free throws.
Other team members included Kacey Liscomb, Natalie Kendall, Emily Lopynski, Taylor Murphy, Gabrielle Schultz, Bethany Lowe, Sanica Bendre and Kelly Kolb.
