Local Olympians get off to good start in Beijing:
Burke native Justin Spring helped the U.S. Men's Gymnastics Team earn a bronze medal in the team competition at the Olympic Games, a feat many thought impossible after the squad lost the services of Paul and Morgan Hamm. Spring competed in four events for the Americans – the vault, parallel bars, horizontal bar and floor exercise – earning the high score on the team for his parallel bar routine.
Averaging nearly 17 minutes per game, West Springfield's Kara Lawson has led the U.S. Olympic women's basketball team in assists during wins over the Czech Republic (97-57 on Aug. 9) and China (108-63 on Aug. 11). Lawson had three points and three assists against the Czech Republic, while notching four points and five assists against China. The women's team faced Mali on Wednesday -- a game that ended after The Times went to press.
Bajkowski earns All-Star honors at basketball camp:
Becca Bajkowski, a rising senior at Woodson, was named an All-Star while competing at the Keystone State Invitational Basketball Camp, which was held at Albright College in Reading, Pa. A starting guard, Bajkowski led the Cavaliers to the Northern Region championship game last season.
